Need to lease a locomotive?

NIWX is at your service!

Why Choose NIWX?

The foremost reason . . . NIWX offers high-quality locomotives, all powered with four-cycle diesel engines (GE and Caterpillar), paired with great service, for both our industrial customers as well as for short lines.

While 4-axle switch locomotives such as the commonplace GP38-2 and remanufactured GP38-3 locomotives with two-cycle EMD 645 engines are still popular, NIWX has found that four-cycle diesel engines such as GE's 7FDL and Caterpillar's 3500 series engines are more fuel-efficient and consume very little, if any, engine oil, offering customers significant periodic maintenance cost savings while simultaneously reducing the environmental footprint.

What We Do:

Who We Are:

Some company history is useful to understand where we are today.

NIWX was founded in 1999 by Ellen and John Howell as the Northern Illinois & Wisconsin Railway. The company, as it evolved into a locomotive leasing concern, became the NIWX Corporation: a "New Name in Locomotive Leasing."

We immediately set out to compete with several established, well-known locomotive leasing companies based on the premise of specialized locomotive leasing needs. We immediately determined that the competition’s support network for maintenance, troubleshooting, and emergency repairs “stretched” at best leaving customers unable to load or unload railcars promptly.

As a small, focused, niche-market company, we knew we could do better by having a strategic service network of competent, localized, specialized service personnel that were ready and able to arrive at the customer’s plant to tackle and resolve any issue. This arrangement has proven very successful and our customers have always enjoyed the ability of our contract services providers to quickly respond. And, we have raised the bar by providing our customers with training and education in the proper day-to-day and scheduled periodic maintenance, in turn further reducing locomotive leasing costs and related overhead.

During the early 2000s, we also recognized that the traditional locomotive leasing marketplace was being supplanted by “contract” plant switching. Companies that traditionally had leased or owned their locomotives began contracting with contractors who provided “contract” switching services inclusive of using their locomotives, operators, and mechanics. However, contract switching has turned into a highly competitive market with locomotive, quality, reliability, and safety being deferred due to the razor-thin “profit” margin. NIWX has, instead, stayed its course and remained true to its model of providing reliable, quality locomotives supported by a vast network of seasoned and very capable locomotive serving personnel who are attuned to the traveling at a moments notice to troubleshoot, repair, train, and maintain locomotives leased to our customers.

Today NIWX continues to focus on acquiring and maintaining a fleet of high-quality locomotives ranging from repowered and upgraded switch engines ideal for small to mid-sized industries to General Electric high-horse-powered, over-the-road locomotives for use on mid-sized shortlines and regional railroads.

NIWX not only has the Power, we have the right power, the best service, and the unparalleled experience to support your every possible locomotive leasing requirement, railcar management, railcar repair services, and track maintenance 24/7/365.
